Love it or hate it, it is sure to cause a lot of talk in the coming weeks on sports blogs, talk/sport radio and in the news.While General Larry Platt's age did not allow him to qualify for American Idol as a viable contestant, he certainly does deserve his 15 minutes of fame and not necessarily for his catchy little tune, "Pants on the Ground".'General' Larry Platt was entertaining on American Idol however many do not know of his work in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's.Platt was active in the movement as young as age 16.He received the nickname of 'General' from Rev.Hosea Williams because of his heroic efforts in the Civil Rights movement.Platt was a student of Martin Luther King Jr.And worked with groups such as Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and Southern Christian Leadership Conference to fight racial segregation in the South.He was beaten during the Bloody Sunday march from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery on March 7, 1965.The Georgia General Assembly proclaimed Sept.4, 2001, Larry Platt Day in Atlanta, because of "his great energy and commitment to equality and the protection of the innocent and for his outstanding service to the Atlanta community and the citizens of Georgia." He continues his activist works today with the United Youth Adult Conference (a volunteer organization set up to find missing children in the Atlanta area) and fighting public foreclosures.Turns out he is one man who really does deserve his 15 minutes of fame! Maybe this somewhat silly national recognition will give him a broader platform his continuing serious activism.Brett Favre's singing "Pants on the Ground" is sure to be a hot topic of conversation for quite some time.Or at least until the Vikings next game!
